Project Description / Scope of Works
The scheme is located on a non-electrified line near Dawlish Warren Station (Devon) on ELR: MLN between 205m00ch and 205m40ch.
Due to excessive erosion of the rock cliffs adjacent to the railway and associated rock fall risks, QTS was commissioned to install a rock fall protection system consisting of augered piles filled with a grouted H beam and timber planks in between.
Unforeseeable ground conditions (i.e. high groundwater table and running sands) required various methodologies to be trialled to ensure the design criteria could be achieved and any delays mitigated.
Due to restrictive access, all materials and equipment had to be delivered using RRVs during week-end possessions for the main works to remain ongoing during the week.
Key Issues
- Revised methodology during implementation due to unforeseeable ground conditions.
- Restrictive access requiring plant and materials mobilisation using RRVs.
- Works within a SSSI
