The works comprised:
- Reducing Lindal tunnel portal by approximately 25metres.
- Cutting regrading works above tunnel generating 36,000t rock & spoil removal.
- Rock drilling and netting of new exposed faces.
- Drainage works.
All works were carried out during a three weeks blockade, between 27th March 2011 and 18th April 2011.
In order to provide Network Rail with a maintenance free solution, QTS provided alternative solutions to the original design involving extending the tunnel removal works to fully remove an existing blind shaft.
All materials disposed off site were recycled locally.
Key Issues
- Revised design solution developed at late stage.
- Works in blockade requiring substantial machinery (2nr 40t excavator, 2nr 20t excavator, 1nr dozer and up to 10nr 8 wagons in turn around).
- Third party liaison for land access.
