Earthworks Enhancements Case Study
Mulben slope on the Aberdeen to Inverness line near Keith is a 45m high soil slope which has caused Network Rail problems for a number of years. Through the CP5 Collaborative RCDP Contract, QTS carried out a Design & Build solution with Donaldson Associates to regrade the slope, installing an easily maintainable drainage system.
As well as replacing the lost farmland by reinstating an adjacent gully with the removed spoil, state of the art GPS enabled long reach excavators and lightweight maintenance access steps resulted in innovative solutions to keep costs down. Throughout the entirety of the project there were over 10,000 man hours worked, 54,000 tonnes of soil removed, 22,000 tonnes of stone placed and zero accidents.
