
Civil Engineer

Role and responsibilities:
- Act as the appointed CRE or Mentored CRE for Civils, ensuring compliance with Network Rail standards and project-specific requirements
- Take responsibility for the engineering assurance of all civil engineering works within the scope of the project
- Review and approve designs, method statements, and work packages to ensure they meet technical and safety standards
- Provide engineering leadership during planning and delivery phases, ensuring constructability and compliance with CDM regulations
- Coordinate with internal engineering teams, designers, and subcontractors to resolve technical queries and manage change
- Ensure all works are delivered in accordance with approved designs and specifications, maintaining robust quality assurance processes
- Support the Project Manager in risk management, identifying engineering risks and implementing mitigation strategies
- Liaise with Network Rail’s Designated Project Engineer (DPE) and other stakeholders to maintain alignment on technical requirements and approvals
- Oversee site inspections and audits to verify compliance with engineering standards and safety requirements
- Maintain accurate records of engineering decisions, approvals, and compliance documentation
- Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives across the framework
Skills Required
- Proven experience in civil engineering within rail infrastructure projects – preferably geotechnical and/or drainage scheme experience. Experience can either be in design consultancy or in site engineering or an assurance role.
- Understanding of Network Rail standards, NR/L2/RSE/02009 (Engineering Management for Projects), and NR/L2/CIV/003 (Engineering and Architectural Assurance of Building and Civil Engineering Works) (required)
- Excellent organisational and communication skills, with the ability to lead technical discussions (required)
- Proficiency in MS Office and engineering/project management tools (required)
- 2.1 in BEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering degree (required)
- Master’s degree in a Civil Engineering discipline (desired)
- Working towards Incorporated IEng or Chartered Status CEng with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) (desired)
- PTS certification and full UK Driving Licence (required)
