QTS was appointed by Network Rail to undertake design development and installation of anti-climb fencing to both parapets of ECM5, Structure 190, Durham Viaduct.
Durham Viaduct
Durham Viaduct is a Grade II listed structure of significant historical and architectural importance, extending approximately 250 metres in length and comprising 11 individual spans. The scope of works involved the installation of purpose-designed anti-climb fencing along the full extent of both parapets, to deter and prevent unauthorised access to the structure by members of the public.
The fencing system was installed using bespoke mounting brackets, uprights and mesh panel which were securely fixed to the parapets in strict compliance with the listed building consent, approved technical design, and all relevant heritage and structural requirements.
The fencing was then finished with seven strands of 2.5mm wire and anti climb guards fitted to the OLE stanchions on the down elevation. The installation methodology was carefully developed to ensure that the integrity, appearance, and fabric of the historic structure were preserved while achieving the required level of security and safety.
All works were delivered in line with Network Rail standards, project-specific approvals, and applicable statutory and heritage constraints, ensuring a compliant, sensitive, and robust solution to mitigate the risk of trespass on this prominent structure.
